My friends and I try to make it a point to spend time together once a month. Since we are all juggling various life situations – I’m in the midst of getting married, another friend has two kids, and another friend is saving for house – we make it a point to find inexpensive things to do.
Many times, we will simply go to each others house and have dinner. Sometimes we will go out, if we can get a good deal. In any case, here are 5 inexpensive things to do that we do a lot of. We do these things a lot because of how much fun we have doing them.
5 Inexpensive Things To Do
On the nights we stay in and have dinner, we usually follow it up with board games. While some may dismiss board games, realize that there are board games for adults. We tend to play Cards Against Humanity. (Before you click on that link to Amazon, understand that the game is for those with a certain sense of humor.) But, we also will play kid games as well.
For instance, one of our favorite games is Trivial Pursuit Junior Edition. Unfortunately, they haven’t made an updated version of this game in a few years and the older versions are scarce on Amazon. You might be thinking that you could easily win if you were to play this version of the game and you may very well be correct. However, it is hilarious to see someone stumble on a very easy answer because they are have a senior moment. Many times the person that takes the big lead rarely wins.
I suggest you play some board games. Have an open mind and just enjoy being with friends. Not all games are great, but there certainly are some gems out there.
Most communities have a calendar where they list the events for the month. In the summer in my community, the town offers free movie nights in the park. Usually the movies are animated kid friendly flicks, but what better way to forget about everything going on in your life than to watch an animated movie intended for kids. While you might be out of place at first, I’m certain you’ll be laughing by the end.
Now that it is getting colder out, the events tend to be wine tastings and art festivals. In all, community calendars are a great option for inexpensive things to do.
TV Show Night
If I’m hanging out with my friends and we don’t feel like playing board games, we tend to fall back on TV Show Night. We’ll round up DVD’s of our favorite shows and we’ll pick episodes to watch. It’s like a greatest episodes night for various shows.
With technology, this option is even easier. If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can stream many TV shows for free. Same holds true for Hulu shows too. If you are a member of Netflix, you have another option for more TV shows.
Draw Group Picture
I have no idea what to call this other than draw group picture. Here is how it works. We all sit around and one person draws something on a piece of paper. Let’s say a house. They then pass the picture to the next person who adds something to it, day a car. The pass the picture to the next person who adds something and the idea continues. Once you get to a point where either you run out of things to add or there is no space left, you can start another drawing.
What makes this fun is that eventually, the new images that are being added to the drawing have absolutely nothing to do with the original picture. We’ve had times where we try to go back to figure out the thought process of how we got to where we were and then laughing because it is so crazy.
This is another idea that had become better with technology. If you have a smartphone, you can download an app and go on scavenger hunts throughout your community. People that play the game will leave treasures to find using the GPS app you download. The treasures aren’t anything special, the fun is in finding them in the first place.
There are few apps to chose from when doing this, but I tend to use the one called GeoCaching. It is a ton of fun. However, if you don’t live in a well populated area, your options for finding treasures might be limited.
Overall, these are 5 inexpensive things that my friends and I typically do to have fun. I’ve written before how I am more interested in simply spending time with my friends and that I don’t really care what we do, as long as we are together. This is how these inexpensive things to do came about. We all decided that just being together, laughing, joking and having a good time was the most important thing. I encourage you to find ways to have fun with little money. There are many things to do, you just need to keep an open mind.
Readers, what are some inexpensive things to do that you do or can think of?
